Now, we pick up such a heavy topic: drugs. Around the world, about 51% of young people have tried an illegal drug by the time they finished high school. One class of drug, inhalants(吸入剂), showed clear evidence of increase in 2004. Inhalant use by the eighth grade rose by a statistically significant l -percentage point, from 7.7% to 8.7% in 2003 and then to 9.6% in 2004. The health of human beings and the peace and quietness of the international society have met a severe challenge, and all kinds of campaigns against drug abuse and drug dealing have been surging. It is now or never that we should fight harder than ever against drugs.
Drug Users’ Accounts
“To me it was cool, I felt like I was in heaven on my first high and everything was very funny.”
“I am in middle school and almost everyone in my school has sipped or gotten totally drunk from alcohol. And I have to admit... I have to. ”
Those are the expressions of typical teen drug abusers’ motivation. Research has shown that young people often first take drugs given to them by friends. Research has also shown that the young lack understanding of the risks of drugs.
About half of young people say that they know the channels of gaining drugs. The most common ways—from the store, friends and doctors—show that young people can easily get drugs. For the young adults, places of amusement, such as bars, clubs and public or private parties, are the most common places for taking drugs.
“I am a white 16-year-old male who abuses drugs. I try to stop taking them, but from time to time I give in. These drugs have ruined my life. I have been to jail for breaking into people’s homes so I could buy more drugs and what’s the worst, I have lost my friends and family. My family no longer trusts me and neither do my friends. So I beg all parents, whatever the cost, keep children away from drugs and please talk to them about drug use. It’s ruined my life. Please don’t let it ruin your children’s. ”
People might not consider cigarettes and alcohol as drugs. But they are. Cigarettes and alcohol, in fact, have a greater impact on society than other drugs, because they more frequently cause illness and death. And it is alarming how easily teenagers get them.
“Sure, I drank alcohol. All my friends did. We’d get it from stores, older family members, anywhere. But we never knew how dangerous it is until one of my friends got drunk and died after crashing his car. ”
Reasons for Taking Drugs
Today more and more youth are involved in drug abuse without correct guidance and the trend seems to be getting worse. Here are some causes of teenagers taking drugs.
● Curiosity During their teenage years, young people form their world view and outlook on life. Childishness and curiosity are the characteristics of this period. And in this period, they want to try anything new in order to fulfill their strong desire for experience. Since they lack the necessary scientific knowledge about drugs and the faculty to understand the difference between right and wrong, they may take drugs. According to a recent survey, 70% of drug abuse among teenagers is due to their curiosity.
● Family influences Family is very influential, since young people often follow the examples of their parents. Here, I would like to present the example of a young person that I spoke with. She came into my office one day and asked me to help her with her drug problem. I asked her why she took drugs. She said she didn’t know. She just knew that drugs were ruining her life and that she had to stop. When I visited her parents, I saw that both of them were drug users. In fact, they could hardly speak to me when I came to their home. And I found out that other drug users came into and went out of their home all the time. Is it any wonder that this teenager had a drug problem? Unfortunately, the story of this teen is common. Young people often learn from their parents.
● Friends’ temptation People must be careful when making friends. Many teenagers are taking drugs because they are careless in making friends. They make friends without considering the bad drug habits their new friends have. And teenagers learn from their friends. According to a survey around the world, many teenagers became addicted because of friends’ temptation.
● Mental emptiness Teenagers are immature both in mind and body. They can be easily influenced by the outside world. They face the stress of entering a higher school, failing love, etc. They want to find something exciting to help them escape from being bored. Drugs can make people excited for a short time and escape from real life temporarily. Accordingly, some teenagers take drugs as a tool for getting away from their ordinary lives. A survey of 116 young drug users shows that many of them fall into the habit of drug use because they are bored and longing for excitement and comfort.
Fight against Drug Abuse
Experts claim that parents are the principal influence on their teenagers’ attitudes toward drug use. They must set a good example for their kids. Parents who are drug-free have a much better chance of rearing drug-free children. If parents are using drugs, they should stop immediately. The unconditional message to their kids must be that drugs are dangerous and will not be tolerated at home. Parents must help their children see the dangers of trying to become like drug users they might admire at school.
The time has come for parents, for caregivers—for all of us—to talk straight to young people and get down to the serious business of telling the truth that drugs—all drugs—are dream killers. Educating teens about drugs and the problems that accompany drug abuse will help them form a healthy opinion concerning drugs.
We’re going to keep pushing ahead until we’re not only around the corner—we’re all the way home. In the fight to save our children’s lives, there is no audience. Everyone is on stage. Everyone has a role to play. Parents and communities must work together to help our kids develop healthy lifestyle alternatives for themselves. So there is plenty of work to go around in the fight against drugs, and the time for action is now.

Questions 47 to 56 are based on the following passage.
The students in my course were doing something new—taking control over their love lives. We grow up on fairy tales and movies in which 47 forces help people find their soul mates, with whom they 48 live happily ever after. The fairy tales leave us powerless, putting our love lives into the hands of the Fates.
But here is a 49 : most of the world has never heard of those fairy tales. Instead more than half of marriages on our globe are brokered by parents or professional matchmakers, whose main 50 are long-term suitability and family harmony. In India an 51 95 percent of the marriages are arranged, and although divorce is legal, India has one of the lowest divorce rates in the world.
Young couples in India generally have a choice about whether to proceed, and the combination of choice and sound guidance probably 52 for the fact that studies of arranged marriages in India indicate that they measure up well—in, for example, longevity, satisfaction and love—against Western marriages. Indeed, the love experienced by Indian couples in arranged marriages appears to be even more 53 than the love people experience in “love marriages.”
A careful look at arranged marriage, combined with the knowledge 54 in relationship science, has the 55 to give us real control over our love lives—without practicing arranged marriage. Americans want it all—the freedom to choose a partner and the deep, lasting love of fantasies and fairy tales. We can achieve that kind of love by learning about and practicing techniques that build love over time. And when our love is 56 , we can use such techniques to rebuild that love. The alternative—leaving it to chance—makes little sense.

You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the center.
Passage One
Questions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage.
You awake with a pounding heart and sweaty hands. Relax, you think to yourself—it was just a bad dream. But are nightmares truly benign? Psychologists aren’t so sure. Although some continue to believe nightmares reduce psychological tensions by letting the brain act out its fears, recent research suggests that nocturnal(夜间的) ordeals(折磨) are more likely to increase anxiety in waking life.
In one study Australian researchers asked 624 high school students about their lives and nightmares during the past year and assessed their stress levels. It is well known that stressful experiences cause nightmares, but if nightmares serve to diffuse that tension, troubled sleepers should have an easier time coping with emotional ordeals. The study, published in the journal Dreaming, did not bear out that hypothesis(假设): not only did nightmares not stave off anxiety, but people who reported being distressed about their dreams were even more likely to suffer from general anxiety than those who experienced an upsetting event such as the divorce of their parents.
It is possible, however, that something is going wrong in the brains of individuals who experience a lot of anxiety, so that normal emotional processing during dreaming fails, says Tore Nielsen, director of the Dream and Nightmare Laboratory at Sacred Heart Hospital in Montreal.
But Nielsen’s most recent results, published in the Journal of Sleep Research last June, actually confirm the Australian findings. To find out how REM sleep—during which most dreaming takes place—affects our emotions, the Canadian researchers showed horrible images (such as death scenes) to a group of healthy volunteers just before they went to bed. When the subjects viewed the same pictures in the morning, those who had been deprived of REM sleep were less emotionally affected than those deprived of other sleep phases. The same was true for those who experienced fewer negative emotions in their dreams. In other words, having nightmares did not make dreamers more relieved in waking life—just the opposite.
What is not clear from these studies is whether nightmares play a causal role in anxiety. Most researchers agree that if the dreams give rise to constant anxiety and concern, it may be a good idea to talk to a mental health professional about it.

Passage Two
Questions 62 to 66 are based on the following passage.
When President announced a plan early this year to send Americans back to the moon—and beyond, to Mars—skeptics wondered whether NASA, with its decades of losing budgets and institutional laziness, was up to the job.
Equally important, though, is a companion question: Is the aerospace industry up to the job? Boeing, for one, says it is eager to take up the challenge, and refers to decades of expertise in running enormously complex space ventures.
But the very process that made it the biggest NASA contractor—a massive consolidation(兼并) of the aerospace industry—has sharply reduced competition, and with it, critics say, the creative clash of ideas that helps produce great technological leaps.
Boeing, Lockheed Martin and other companies that contribute to the space program are the stewards(管理者) of an ailing industry, facing a brain drain as its aging engineers retire, with few newcomers entering the field.
The uncertainty has been underscored recently. “Is the nation really going to support, given the budget deficit, spending more money on a manned mission?”asked Cai von Rumohr, an aerospace analyst at SG Cowan. Given all the unknowns, he said, trying to estimate the impact on particular companies is not even worth the effort.
If space exploration proceeds, of course, Boeing stands to benefit tremendously. The company has absorbed the military and aerospace units of Rockwell, builder of the space shuttle; Rocket dyne, a Rockwell unit that built the main shuttle engines; and McDonnell Douglas, builder of some shuttle components.
Charles Hill, Professor at the University of Washington in Seattle, points out that though any missions to the moon or to Mars would be “strategically important” to Boeing in its attempts to broaden beyond commercial aviation and military work, Boeing has pressing issues to deal with now. Last year, Airbus surpassed it in commercial aviation sales. Last month, the government canceled its longstanding development work on the Comanche helicopter. In 2003, the space unit of Boeing lost nearly $ 1.8 billion on $ 3 billion in revenue.
Though a Mars mission could be lucrative, it would not lift Boeing out of its current trough. “It is so far out in the future”, Hill added.
