　　as can be seen clear ly f rom the gr aph , the differ ence in the number s of people working in the three major employment sector s in the u .k . economy in the early 1980s was r elatively small , with about 4 million worke rs in engineering , 5 million in agriculture and 5 .5 million in the se rvice indust ries .

　　however , the period 1980-1990 saw significant changes in the relative sizes of these th ree employment sector s . there was a r apid decline in employment in agricultur e, with the number of workers dropping by more than 80% . on the other , employment oppor tunities in the service indust ries in- creased sharply , especially after 1986 , wher eas the engineer - ing sector experienced a gr adual but constant decline .
